In Your Eyes
We’ve all heard that “Eyes are the window to the soul…”
But--have you ever thought about looking into God’s eyes? And therefore looking in to His soul?
I haven’t really thought about it. Until now. And I still have a lot to learn about this…but these are my thoughts of the day. They could be right; they could be totally wrong; but either way, they show a little glimpse of me on my journey.
This blog really started because I had that Peter Gabriel song in my head yesterday…you know, this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zrzr4R3LpsQ
No, I haven’t heard that song recently.
Yes, this song came out the year I was born.
Yes, if I had a boombox I would play it really loud right now.
Yes, I like it.
No, I don’t know why it was stuck in my head yesterday.
Anyway, there is one phrase in the lyrics of that song jumps out at me every time. It says, “In your eyes/ the resolution of all the fruitless searches”.
I love that. It encompasses exactly what looking into the soul of God would do.
We all, myself included, try to fill our lives with so many things. Social time, nice place to live, hobbies, adventure, relationships… not that any of those are bad—they’re not. A lot of things we fills are lives with are requirements for a emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually healthy life. However, we also all search for things constantly. If something isn’t going the way we want it, what can we do to change that? Pills? Therapy? Self-help resources? Get a new guy/girl? There’s numerous “worldly” things that we long for..that we go after..that we incorporate into our daily lives. It’s hard to be searching for something and not being able to find it. Hundreds of people can tell you where their searches led them, what roads they traveled, what addictions they overcame…all of it coming full circle when they realize that they were looking for the wrong things all along. They had a hard journey but finally resolved their previously fruitless searching with what was really important.
I think it’s so interesting that in the Old Testament, Moses requests to SEE God. But even the backside of God was so glorious that Moses couldn’t look at Him directly.
Yet!--we are not only allowed to look into the intimate eyes of God and into His soul, but He WANTS us to. How amazing!
When you are looking into someone else's eyes, you must be close to them. Yes, physically. But when you are looking into their soul, you must be close to them relationally. Or you won’t see anything.
And since “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder…”, when we are relationally close to our Lord and gazing into His eyes, we will see an exact reflection of how He views us. The one who beholds us and knows every sin and imperfection of our lives thinks we are beautiful.
And His soul manifests that.

I think God whispers in our ear and tells us exactly how to avoid this circle…
He tells us to look for Him. He tells us to look at Him. He tells us to focus on Him.
And when you’re focused on the loving eyes of our Savior, all your searching will cease.
You will find what you wanted all along. You will find so many things that the world cannot offer.
You will find Joy. You will find Peace. You will find a Love beyond all measure…
and that Love will give you goosebumps because of how incredible it is!
And you will no longer have a need to search.
Your search becomes your find.
