Achtung, Aleisha!!

I have a tragic story.

But first I have to preface this story from two different angles.

Angle #1 of the preface: I need to confess some things.
a) I'm clumsy. I trip a lot. I fall a lot. I hurt myself.
More or less, I'm not very graceful and it seems to get worse when I try hard to BE graceful. Surely I'm not as bad as to be called a clutz...but clumsy?  Yes.
b) I have a horrible tendency of hurting other people. on accident. not all the time. but my clumsiness sometimes gets in the way... for example: Christmas break 2009, a group of friends and i went down to Austin and San Antonio for the weekend. Well my friend Ryan injured his knee that first night we were there and the next day we had to run around the Austin/San Antonio area trying to find crutches and a brace for him so he could walk around with us. (And no, i had nothing to do with the injured knee, surprisingly). Well we found a store for Lance and Ryan to go into to get the needed items.  As Lance and Ryan were in the store, Andrea (yes, Austrian Andrea in Texas!) and I waited in the car.  I parked strategically where i could see the entrance/exit of the store and when the boys came out I drove up to the edge of the aisle so they wouldn't have to walk so far.  Well at this same time I was on the phone with mom and thus was slightly distracted.  I've always thought I was a really good multi-tasker but apparently my brain doesn't function when I'm having a phone conversation. So the boys came to the car and Lance got in and shut the door so therefore I thought we were good to go.  Let's hit the road!  Mission accomplished!
I pull forward.
I hear yelling and wonder what in the world is going on behind me.... ohh..!?  Ryan was not yet in the car.

AND I had run over Ryan's foot.

With my tire.  Of my car.  The same foot of his injured knee.
So then I stopped. I braked and parked ON his foot because I was still on the phone and braking/parking was the only thing I could think to do when I hear urgent yelling!  Who runs over someone's foot??
Okay, so this story is an example of what I'm talking about when I say that I accidentally injure people.  I don't mean to.  Thankfully, Ryan forgave me for that incident :) and his foot was not hurt--just a little sore..

Angle #2 of the preface: you need to understand something.
I love pictures.  Love them!  I carry around my camera 24/7 and have it ready at any point in time when a moment needs to be captured.
Okay, so if I carry around my camera and take pictures on a normal basis when I'm living my everyday life, one can imagine that I'd FOR SURE have my camera in my hand constantly when I'm on a trip. right??  Right.
My camera is available to me at a moment's notice on trips, including this trip that I'm currently on--of course.  I carry my camera in my hand, but I hate looking like a tourist. so I often take pictures 'on the fly'.  I try to fit in with my surroundings, choose the perfect camera setting, visualize what I want to take a picture of, then initiate action and let the machine do it's thang!  However this doesn't always work out and I look like a tourist anyway.  Oh well...

Point being--I love pictures.  I love capturing stories, seeing artistic angles of natural life and natural occurances, making a still hard-copy of a memory that will last a lifetime, expressing feelings in a visual way, and I love my camera that allows me to do such.

Now on to the story that I originally started to tell.

It was a fine Saturday evening in Istanbul with Andrea.  The weather had been great all day, but it had started raining--not pouring--just raining slightly during the evening.  Thus when we were walking around an area of Istanbul called Taxim, the stone roads and walkways were slippery.  Stone roads, slippery walkways, and comfortable walking shoes that have no traction = bad news for Aleisha.  So yes, no surprise here, I slipped a couple of times.  One particular instance I slipped, tripped and tried NOT to fall and my camera few out of my hands!  It fell with a bang a couple feet away, but it was in its cushion-y case and I was just so relieved about not falling that I didn't think anything about how my camera was.  I had dropped it, but no problem.

Weeeell there was a problem.  I pulled it out of its case about 20 minutes later to take a picture of the myriad of clams with rice stuffed inside that street vendors were selling. and my camera was broken.  Donesky.  A goner.

Noooooo!! --refer to preface angle #2--

Okay, this is like a Shakespearean tragedy here.  Minus the deaths by sword, family drama, poisonings, or any lovers at all.  Still.  A tragedy of epic proportions.
I wasn't very happy but could only be mad at myself for slipping. --refer to preface angle #1 a)--

Okay, this story is getting lengthy, I'm sorry--let me sum what what happened with the camera.  Andrea and I searched far and wide for a new camera.  The cheap ones that I felt I could afford were, obviously, crappy quality, and to buy a camera that was anywhere close quality of the one i had would cost me a pretty penny (or Lira).  We found a place that said they could fix my current camera. So I had it fixed.  It was not cheap, but at least I have a good camera!  I did, however, lose two days worth of pictures during the process so according to my camera, 2 days of my trip are missing.  But don't worry, Andrea is supplying me with her pictures as well as pictures I took with her camera while I didn't have one.  How would Andrea trust me, a very clumsy friend who broke her own treasured machine, with her camera?  She's a good friend, that's how. However...

On our last night in Istanbul I had my camera back and was taking pictures galore!  Andrea handed me her camera to take a picture of her in front of this tiny little door we thought was amusing. She was transitioning her camera to my capable hands, when those hands of mine dropped her camera.... and broke it.

Are you kidding me?!  Did I really break TWO expensive cameras on one trip??
I did, yes.

The point of the story is that I'm like Lucy (I Love Lucy) -- I get myself into these situations and can't do anything 'normal'.  But that's just me! (sorry about your camera, andrea!)  I'm trying really hard not to hurt anyone else or anything else :)

"Achtung" in the German language means "warning!" or "watch out" or "be careful"!  So..
Achtung, Aleisha!!

  1. Maybe you should retract the explanations of "Lucy" for the benefit of an important dig. They may not want a Lucy in their dirt... crunching pottery & bones...! :)MJ
